On the peripheral of Tororo’s agricultural landscape, a remarkable story of empowerment and transformation is unfolding. The Aturukuku LERWA Farmers’ Cooperative Society based in Rubongi subcounty has been at the forefront of driving positive change, and their recent 2nd Annual General Meeting held on 26th April 2024 showcased the remarkable progress they have made.
Grounded in a mission to promote financial inclusion, agricultural investment, and sustainable farming practices, the cooperative has made significant strides in the past year. The membership has grown to 101 members, with a capital base of 4,455,384/=, enabling them to access crucial financial services and engage in income-generating activities.
One of the cooperative’s key achievements has been its focus on agricultural investment promotion. Through trainings and workshops on cooperative formation, financial management, and innovative farming techniques, such as mushroom cultivation, vegetable permagardening, and sorghum cultivation, the cooperative has empowered its members to enhance their economic well-being.
The establishment of market linkages has also been a game-changer for the cooperative. By partnering with the Women Permagardening project, the cooperative has created new opportunities for its members to grow and sell their produce within their communities. This has not only increased their income but also strengthened the local food system.
Looking towards the future, the Aturukuku LERWA Farmers’ Cooperative Society is poised for even greater success. The cooperative is working to sign an MOU with Uganda Aromatics Ltd. to grow and supply simsim seed, soya beans, and moringa seeds, opening up new avenues for its members to diversify their agricultural activities.
Additionally, the cooperative has leased 11.8 hectares of farmland in Aturukuku zone, Rubongi subcounty, where they plan to engage in mixed farming, including crop production, fruit orchard management, livestock rearing, and agroprocessing. This strategic move will not only increase the cooperative’s agricultural output but also provide valuable hands-on training and support for its members.
The cooperative’s commitment to sustainable farming practices is also commendable. Through initiatives like agroforestry, waste management, and environmental stewardship, the Aturukuku LERWA Farmers’ Cooperative Society is setting an example for the region, demonstrating that economic development and environmental conservation can go hand in hand.
As the cooperative looks ahead, its focus on strengthening partnerships, expanding training programs, and exploring new ventures is a testament to its unwavering dedication to empowering subsistence farmers and building a more prosperous future for the community.
The story of the Aturukuku LERWA Farmers’ Cooperative Society is one of resilience, innovation, and the power of collective action. By empowering farmers and fostering sustainable agricultural practices, this cooperative is not only transforming lives but also paving the way for a more food-secure and environmentally-conscious future.
